We tested Pimsleur’s courses against five other apps and tutoring platforms to see how its audio-first method holds up on speaking practice, pronunciation and price once the free trial ends.
Pimsleur is an audio-first language-learning app built around one idea: you learn to speak by speaking, out loud, from the very first lesson, across the 51 languages it offers. It’s our #2-ranked pick in our 2026 testing, scoring 9.7/10 overall — here’s exactly why, and where it falls short.

What we liked
What held it back
Pimsleur is an audio-based language-learning app built on the Pimsleur Method, a spaced-repetition system developed by linguist Dr. Paul Pimsleur in the 1960s and refined into app form for 51 languages today. Unlike text-first apps, Pimsleur lessons work almost entirely through listening and speaking — you hear a phrase, repeat it out loud, and get tested on recall at increasing intervals, with no screen required once a lesson starts.
For Spanish, Pimsleur offers separate Latin American and Castilian courses, each running 150 lessons across 5 levels.
Every Pimsleur lesson runs about 30 minutes and is designed to be completed in one sitting, ideally out loud. There’s no vocabulary list to memorize first — you’re speaking out loud within the first few minutes of lesson one, which is the core reason it scores so highly with learners who want to build conversational confidence fast, in any of its 51 languages.
Pimsleur’s new AI Voice Coach adds live pronunciation feedback on top of the core audio method — a rare feature for an audio-only app, and the reason its Speaking Practice subscore ties for the highest of any app we tested.
The app interface is deliberately minimal: a play button, a progress bar, and not much else to look at, since the method is built around listening rather than reading. That’s a feature for hands-free study, but a drawback if you want a more visual, gamified experience.
Spanish Premium costs $19.95 per month. All Access, covering 51 languages, is also available; check the checkout page for its current price and plan terms.
The full app comes with a 7-day free trial. Cancel in your account before the trial ends to avoid subscription charges. Cancelling afterward stops the next renewal; subscription charges already paid are not refunded.
Pimsleur’s help center covers billing and account questions well, though like Babbel it has no live chat. A companion reading app (sold as an add-on in some plans) can supplement the core audio course for learners who eventually want more written practice.
The Bottom Line: Pimsleur is the strongest pick we tested for pronunciation and hands-free listening practice — ideal for a commute or drive, less so if you want to read and write as well as speak, in any of its languages.

Yes — the Latin American course is the default Spanish track, with a separate Castilian edition also available.
Pimsleur offers 51 languages in total, including French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Mandarin. The audio-first method and lesson structure are the same across all of them, so this review’s findings apply regardless of which language you pick.

No — Pimsleur is a self-paced audio app with no live tutor built in. If live conversation practice matters most to you, Preply’s 1-on-1 tutoring may be a better fit.
Yes, though it works differently from a typical beginner app — you start speaking full phrases immediately rather than building up from single words, which some absolute beginners find intense at first but effective within a few lessons.
